Texas Tech Quarterback Brendan Sorsby to Enter 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft After Dropping NCAA Lawsuit
Sorsby will withdraw his NCAA lawsuit Tuesday after a temporary injunction allowing him to play is no longer valid. He admitted to thousands of sports bets, including on his own team.
CBS SportsTexas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby plans to enter the 2026 NFL supplemental draft. He will withdraw his lawsuit against the NCAA on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, after a temporary injunction that had allowed him to compete is no longer valid. Sorsby admitted to placing thousands of bets over four years as a student-athlete at Cincinnati and Indiana.
CBS Sports reported that he placed wagers on his own team while at Indiana. Under NCAA rules, betting on one’s own school or team can result in permanent loss of eligibility. Sorsby received an injunction from Lubbock County District Court that permitted him to play pending a February 2027 trial.
The NCAA appealed that ruling. CBS Sports reported that the legal dispute involves the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech board chairman Cody Campbell said the decision followed discussions with Sorsby and his family.
“This decision was made with Brendan and his family and is purely an output of practical analysis of the situation,” Campbell stated. Campbell also said Texas Tech will not seek repayment of money already paid under Sorsby’s contract, which was slated to pay him over $5 million.
“This is the only viable and fair path for Brendan and his future, as well as for his teammates, and our university,” Campbell stated.
The Red Raiders will transition to quarterback Will Hammond, who suffered a torn ACL in October 2025 and missed the entire spring while recovering. Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech from another program before the eligibility issues arose.
