Texas Tech Quarterback Made Over 2,900 Bets Totaling $90,000 While in College
Court documents show Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby placed thousands of sports bets totaling at least $90,000 during his college career. The filings were submitted ahead of a Monday hearing on his lawsuit against the NCAA.

Court documents filed in Lubbock County, Texas, state that Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby placed at least 2,900 sports bets totaling more than $90,000 while enrolled at three universities. The filings were submitted before a scheduled Monday hearing on Sorsby's lawsuit seeking a temporary injunction to restore his eligibility for the upcoming season.
Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech after playing at Cincinnati and was ruled ineligible after acknowledging sports wagering. Texas Tech requested reinstatement on May 19, and the NCAA denied the request on May 22. The school announced an appeal this week. Sorsby filed the lawsuit on May 18, the same day Texas Tech declared him ineligible.
According to stipulated facts in the documents, Sorsby made at least 2,900 bets totaling more than $30,000 while at Indiana from June 2022 through December 2023. Those included at least 40 bets on Indiana football games and players, though none on contests in which he participated.
He placed approximately 40 additional bets on Indiana men's basketball and roughly 300 bets on other college football games during that period. After transferring to Cincinnati, Sorsby continued betting but did not wager on Bearcats games and began using accounts not registered in his name.
Between December 25, 2023, and June 23, 2025, he provided more than $60,000 to a friend to deposit into a FanDuel account registered to his brother-in-law. Since arriving at Texas Tech, where online betting is illegal, Sorsby sent about $5,000 via Venmo or Zelle to others who placed bets for him.
The NCAA received a tip about Sorsby's gambling from an online betting operator on March 11 after being contacted by law enforcement. Texas Tech was notified of the investigation on April 14. On April 27, the university announced that Sorsby had entered a 35-day residential treatment program for gambling addiction and was taking an indefinite leave of absence.
He has completed the program. Coach Joey McGuire stated this week that Sorsby is close to returning to campus and can still participate in offseason workouts.
