U.S. Government Accountability Office from Washington, DC, United States / Wikimedia (Public domain)Thailand said Wednesday it would tighten oversight of tourist behavior after a series of incidents involving foreigners caught engaging in sexual acts in public. The prime minister’s office stated that visitors displaying inappropriate behavior, including illicit drug use, would face prosecution. Officials said such conduct contradicts the culture of Thailand.
The announcement followed an incident Monday evening on the southern island of Phuket. A couple was found performing a sexual act in a tuk-tuk in a popular tourist area. Authorities are working to revoke the visas of the 41-year-old Spanish man and the 43-year-old Peruvian woman involved, with plans to deport and blacklist them.
The pair admitted to the act and were charged under public indecency laws. Tourism plays a significant role in the Thai economy, though foreign arrivals have not yet returned to pre-Covid levels.
