A third Malawian national died on 6 July 2026 while traveling on a repatriation bus from South Africa, AllAfrica reported. The passenger fell ill and died roughly 10 kilometres after the bus left the processing centre. The driver immediately returned to the centre.
South African Police Service officers conducted mandatory investigations and forensic examinations before clearing the bus shortly before midnight, allowing the remaining passengers to continue. In a statement issued by Deputy Government Spokesperson William Baloyi on behalf of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, the South African government expressed condolences to the family and to Malawi.
The statement said details would be shared with Malawian authorities through diplomatic channels.
This marks the third fatality recorded during the ongoing voluntary repatriation operation.
