msnbc.comThousands gathered on the National Mall on Sunday for an event called Rededicate 250 that featured prayer, worship music, and patriotic speeches marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. The program included addresses by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and House Speaker Mike Johnson.
More than a dozen Christian faith leaders and one rabbi also spoke. Organizers described the gathering as an opportunity to rededicate the country as one nation under God. Attendees said they viewed the event as a response to what they described as a decline in religious values in public life.
Minnesota resident Debra DeGuiseppi told NBC News she believed the country had turned away from religious principles. She described what she called a spiritual attack on the nation. Joe Johnson, who traveled from Asheville, North Carolina, said faith is foundational to the country’s future. He stated that without God the country would go nowhere.
The event was hosted by Freedom 250, a Trump-backed organization planning additional events this summer. President Donald Trump and his administration have included religious symbols in public events, such as Oval Office prayer circles. The Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, CEO of the Interfaith Alliance, said the gathering promoted a narrow view of American religious identity.
He stated that the event focused on one tradition rather than the country’s religious diversity.
