Thousands Protest May Day in Turkey; Over 500 Arrested in Istanbul Clashes

Turkish police arrested more than 500 people during May Day rallies across the country, with many detentions occurring as demonstrators attempted to reach Istanbul's Taksim Square. Officers fired tear gas to disperse crowds in Istanbul, including in the Mecidiyekoy district where groups breached police barricades.

The CHD lawyers' group reported the arrest figure, noting the events unfolded amid heavy security deployments typical for the annual workers' marches.

Thousands rallied nationwide in Turkey for May Day, gathering in locations such as Tandogan Square in Ankara, Gundogdu Square in Izmir, and Istasyon Square in Diyarbakır. Trade unions organized events in cities from Bursa to Corum, with extensive security measures in place at square entrances since early Friday morning.

In Istanbul, celebrations were permitted and took place in Kadikoy and Kartal by the governor's office, contrasting with the bans elsewhere.

Police sealed off Taksim Square overnight before May Day, a site banned for demonstrations since 2013 and known for past anti-government protests. A large group in Mecidiyekoy, including Erkan Bas, president of the Turkish Workers' Party, faced water cannons and tear gas after pushing through barriers. Bas stated that blocking access to Taksim Square was 'illegal' and called for it to be opened.

Turkey deploys major police forces in Istanbul every year for May Day, when marches led by workers and unions mark the occasion. In the United States, Americans took to the streets on Friday for May Day, also referred to as International Workers' Day. Some cities saw 'Workers Over Billionaires' rallies and marches this year.

The day commemorates the 1886 Haymarket Affair, a Chicago protest for an eight-hour workday that turned into a violent clash between demonstrators and police.
