Thousands Throng Tehran Streets for Khamenei Funeral Procession
Mourners filled the streets of the Iranian capital on Monday during the dayslong funeral for slain former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. His body is scheduled to be laid to rest Thursday in Mashhad after stops in Qom, Najaf and Karbala.

Thousands of mourners thronged the streets of Tehran on Monday as the dayslong funeral for slain former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei continued. A truck carrying his coffin and those of four family members moved through crowds of black-clad mourners who reached out to touch the grating. Authorities shut down streets, airspace and daily life for the mourning.

His funeral began on Saturday. The body will be taken to Qom, Najaf and Karbala before being laid to rest on Thursday in Mashhad. Footage showed the coffin draped with the Iranian flag and topped with his black turban, placed on a large black platform alongside the other coffins.
Tens of thousands gathered in Tehran on Sunday, with some chanting calls for revenge against the U.S. Three of Khamenei's sons attended the gathering, but his successor Mojtaba did not appear. The latest round of indirect technical talks between the U.S.
And Iran concluded with positive progress, according to a statement from the Pakistani Foreign Ministry. Qatar and Pakistan mediated the talks in Doha. Another round is expected after the funeral. Vice President JD Vance said there would be no tolls in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said passage would be free of charge only for 60 days and that Iran would not give up its rights. Israel's defence minister Katz said his country assassinated Khamenei for allegedly leading a plan to destroy Israel and added that Khamenei's son Mojtaba was marked for death.
