A new app from the Thread Group standards body provides visibility into Thread-based smart home networks. The beta release gives users data on device connections, signal strength, and mesh extenders to aid troubleshooting.
The VergeA beta version of the Thread Networks Diagnostics Tools app launched today on iOS, with an Android version previously available in alpha. The app supplies data on connected devices, border routers, mesh extenders, and signal strength for Thread protocol networks.
Network visibility features When linked to a home Wi-Fi network, the app displays which devices connect to which routers and shows signal readings between them. Users can export detailed logs as JSON files for further review by manufacturers or other tools.
The release follows reports of connection problems with Matter-compatible Thread devices since 2023. Earlier diagnostic options existed in some platforms and manufacturer tools, but no dedicated app offered network-wide visibility until now.
Current limitations and future plans Testing showed the app displays mesh details for only one network at a time and identifies devices by numeric IDs rather than names. Officials said work continues on features to connect across multiple networks and to merge separate Thread networks.
The project runs as an open-source effort on GitHub, allowing developers to submit code changes. Officials stated they expect additional capabilities and third-party integrations to follow.
