Three Children Die After Boat Capsizes on Geneva Lake in Severe Storm

Three children died Friday after a privately owned recreational boat capsized on Geneva Lake in southern Wisconsin during a severe storm, police said. The Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency said the boat carried six adults and four children when a sudden storm created dangerous wind and wave conditions.

The vessel attempted to reach safety but was overwhelmed, took on water, capsized and sank. First responders rescued the six adults and one child. After an intensive search, the three missing children were recovered from the water. Lifesaving measures were administered at the scene and continued by EMTs, but all three were pronounced dead at local medical facilities.

The Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are investigating the incident. Officials said all four children on the boat were wearing life jackets. The victims have not been identified pending family notification.

A source told CBS News Chicago the three children are believed to have been under age 13.
