Three Children and Seven Others Involved in Geneva Lake Boat Capsizing During July 4 Storm

Three children died after a privately owned recreational motorboat capsized in Geneva Lake in Walworth County, Wisconsin, during a storm on or before July 4, 2026. The boat carried 10 occupants, including four children, and was overwhelmed by severe wind and waves while attempting to reach safety.

Six adults and one child were rescued, while the three deceased children were recovered unresponsive after an intensive search.

All four children on the boat were wearing life vests, according to the Geneva Lake police department. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency are investigating the incident. Lake Geneva Mayor Todd Krause declared an emergency after the storm.

One person suffered minor injuries from a falling tree, and downed power lines and trees blocked some streets in the city. Storms that struck the New York area late on July 3, 2026, left hundreds of thousands of utility customers without power, canceled trains to New Jersey, and damaged or uprooted thousands of trees.

Combined with Midwest storms, nearly 1 million residents across both regions lost power.

By noon on July 4, about 750,000 customers remained without electricity in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and New Jersey. Multiple cities canceled holiday festivals and rescheduled fireworks displays. ” By noon on July 4, temperatures in parts of the Northeast had returned to triple digits.

Additional storms were forecast to bring lower temperatures early the following week.
