Russia launched 216 drones at Ukraine overnight on May 11-12 2026, just hours after a three-day ceasefire expired, Ukrainian officials said. The strikes hit a kindergarten and other civilian infrastructure, killing at least one person and injuring at least six. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X: 'We proposed Moscow to extend the partial ceasefire beyond May 11.
About 192 of the 216 drones were downed or neutralized, according to Ukraine’s air force. The ceasefire had covered May 9 to May 11 2026 to commemorate the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany. It formed part of a US-led push for peace.
President Trump said on May 9 2026 that he hoped the truce would be extended. Russian attacks killed at least six in Ukraine, Zelensky said. In response, Ukraine attacked the Russian city of Orenburg, which is about 745 miles from Ukraine’s border, the Kyiv Independent reported.
