calgaryherald.comLeeds Crown Court on Friday sentenced three inmates to whole-life orders for the November 2024 stabbing death of convicted child killer Kyle Bevan inside HMP Wakefield. Mark Fellows, 45, Lee Newell, 57, and David Taylor, 64 stormed Bevan’s cell at the maximum-security prison in northern England, according to surveillance footage obtained by the BBC.
The three men walked out of the cell roughly four and a half minutes later.
Bevan suffered more than 25 stab and slash wounds and bled to death in his cell. His body was placed in bed to make it appear he was asleep and was discovered during a prison roll call the following morning. Judge Justice McGowan imposed the whole-life orders.
She noted that Fellows and Newell were already serving whole-life orders for previous murders and that it was outside her experience to sentence someone for a third murder. “You chose him as your target as he had been convicted of the murder of a child,” McGowan said. ” “His last moments must have been terrifying,” the judge added.
Prosecutors said Bevan was ambushed with makeshift weapons, including one fashioned from metal taken from the back of a television. McGowan stated the defendants were “congratulatory” after the killing and that word quickly spread through the prison that the child killer was dead. Bevan was serving a life sentence for the 2020 murder of his partner’s 2-year-old daughter, Lola James.
Fellows, known as “The Iceman,” was already serving a whole-life term for two gangland murders. Newell was serving a whole-life sentence for murder and had previously been convicted of killing another child killer inside his prison cell in 2013. Taylor was also handed a whole-life order Friday for the murder of 24-year-old Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin and the attempted murder of Greater Manchester police detective Darren Bratby.
Apostoloff-Boyarin disappeared after traveling from Manchester to Durham in January 2022. Taylor pleaded guilty to murdering her earlier this year but has refused to reveal what happened to her body. He stabbed Bratby during an interview at another prison; the detective survived and made a full recovery.
There are believed to be only around 75 inmates serving whole-life orders in England and Wales.
