Three Inmates Receive Whole-Life Orders for Murder at HMP Wakefield

A Leeds Crown Court jury found Mark Fellows, 45, David Taylor, 64, and Lee Newell, 57, guilty of murdering Kyle Bevan at HMP Wakefield on 4 November. The three men used makeshift weapons, including one fashioned from a metal part taken from the back of a television, to stab Bevan 25 times inside his cell.

CCTV footage showed the defendants following Bevan into his cell at about 17:30 and cornering him.

They emerged less than five minutes later. The court heard they placed Bevan in bed to create the appearance he was asleep, delaying discovery of the body until the following morning. Mrs Justice McGowan sentenced Fellows and Newell to new and separate life terms on top of the whole-life orders they were already serving for earlier convictions.

She gave Taylor a whole-life order for Bevan’s murder in addition to the offences for which he had been on remand. ” She also noted that Fellows attempted to dispose of bloodstained trousers and that all three defendants had blood on their shoes. Mrs Justice McGowan addressed the motive directly.

“You chose him as your target as he had been convicted of the murder of a child,” she said. She added that the men returned to their landing “in a satisfied, job-done mood” and that “there were congratulations when you returned to your own landing. ” Kyle Bevan, 33, had been serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 28 years for the 2020 murder of his partner’s two-year-old daughter, Lola James, in Pembrokeshire.
