New York PostAt least three protesters were detained outside Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, during clashes on May 28. Video shows officers leading away three demonstrators. One protester shouted through a megaphone at agents, while others yelled statements including calls for officers to shoot themselves.
Some protesters wore keffiyeh scarves and attempted to block vehicles and personnel from entering or leaving the facility. These efforts led to physical confrontations with law enforcement, and at least one agent deployed pepper spray toward a protester wearing a gas mask.
Activists have stated that detainees inside Delaney Hall are conducting a hunger strike over living conditions. Officials from the Department of Homeland Security have rejected those assertions and said detainees receive meals, water, blankets, and medical care.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherill said she was denied entry to the building on Memorial Day and posted on X that state health inspectors should be allowed inside if conditions match official descriptions. A DHS official responded that inspectors had visited the facility earlier that day.
