Tick Season Begins Earlier Than Prior Years

Public health agencies have recorded elevated tick activity across multiple U.S. regions in recent weeks. Data collected through May show case counts running above seasonal averages for the same period last year.

State surveillance programs in the Northeast and Midwest documented the largest increases. Health departments in those areas issued reminders about protective clothing and tick checks after outdoor activities.

Warmer spring temperatures and changes in land use have been cited by researchers as conditions that favor tick survival and reproduction. Officials said expanded deer populations in suburban areas also support higher tick numbers.

Health agencies continue to recommend daily tick inspections and prompt removal of any attached ticks. Residents are advised to use EPA-registered repellents when spending time in wooded or grassy areas.
