Tinned tuna sales rise nearly 18 percent at Tesco over two years
Tesco reported an 18 percent increase in tinned tuna sales over the past two years. The supermarket attributed the growth to social media trends and younger shoppers seeking affordable protein options.
retailtimes.co.ukTesco reported that its sales of tinned tuna have risen by nearly 18 per cent in the last two years, equating to an additional 2.25 million kilograms of the product. The supermarket said tinned tuna has become popular again among younger consumers who see it as a cheap and convenient protein source.
A company buyer stated that the trend began in the United States several years ago and has now gained traction in the UK.
The buyer noted that social media platforms show many posts featuring tinned fish meals and tips for preparing simple dishes such as tuna pasta bakes. The same statement said tinned fish has not been viewed as an exciting product for nearly 100 years.
A supplier to the supermarket said tinned tuna previously appealed mainly to older customers. The supplier added that younger shoppers now recognize the versatility of tuna and that some restaurants have begun adding it to their menus.
Tesco confirmed that all its tuna products carry the Marine Stewardship Council blue tick for sustainable sourcing. The supermarket said 85 per cent of its wild-caught seafood meets MSC standards. The MSC recognized the supermarket as its retailer of the year in 2025. A programme director for the organization said the certification meets expectations of younger consumers who value sustainability.
