Tokyo prosecutor investigated over relationship with questioned suspect

The Supreme Public Prosecutors Office announced it is investigating a 48-year-old male prosecutor in Tokyo after reports that he began a relationship with a woman he had questioned during a political funds scandal. The prosecutor led the investigation into the Liberal Democratic Party funds case and questioned the woman in her 30s as a suspect between 2023 and 2024.

The two later began a relationship and stayed together in a hotel room reserved for investigative purposes, according to informed sources.

On Thursday the office stated it will examine the matter carefully before taking strict measures. The prosecutor left the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office special investigation squad last year and now works at the Tokyo High Public Prosecutors Office.

A separate prosecutor at the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office is already facing a criminal trial over alleged improper interrogation methods in a fraud case.
