The Toronto Maple Leafs dismissed assistant general manager Hayley Wickenheiser, assistant general manager Darryl Metcalf, head of amateur scouting Mark Leach and several analytics employees on July 9. General manager John Chayka said the moves followed an organizational review.
abcnews.go.comThe Toronto Maple Leafs fired assistant general manager Hayley Wickenheiser on Thursday along with assistant general manager Darryl Metcalf, head of amateur scouting Mark Leach and several key analytics employees, ESPN reported. The team dismissed nearly a dozen employees in total.
Wickenheiser, a Hockey Hall of Famer who joined the organization in 2018 and became assistant general manager in 2022, confirmed the dismissal in a social media post.
She wrote that recent discussions with general manager John Chayka had led her to expect a continued significant role, but the new leadership group chose a different path. Leach had overseen Toronto's selection of Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft.
Chayka said in a statement that the decisions followed an ongoing evaluation of the organization and were not a reflection of the commitment shown by those affected.
"We are sincerely grateful for everything they have contributed to this organization and wish them nothing but the very best in the future," Chayka said.
