Toronto transferred the rights to a restricted free agent forward to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, hours before NHL free agency opened at noon Eastern time. The forward had received a $1.8 million qualifying offer from Toronto earlier in the week. The move reunites the player with the Penguins' general manager, who previously served as Toronto's general manager from 2018 to 2023 and selected the forward in the second round of the 2019 draft.
Player's time with Toronto The forward played three full seasons with Toronto and appeared in a bottom-six role. He was a healthy scratch for stretches of the past two seasons and submitted a trade request last summer that did not result in a deal. The forward signed consecutive one-year contracts to remain with Toronto before changing agents this offseason.
Toronto's new general manager completed the rights transfer this week.
Recent performance The forward recorded 16 goals and 32 points in 78 games during the 2025-26 season. He holds arbitration rights and can now negotiate a new contract with Pittsburgh or be included in future trades.
