Tottenham will pay Newcastle an initial £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons for the Italian midfielder. The fee surpasses Tottenham's earlier £85 million outlay for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.
winnipegfreepress.comTottenham Hotspur have agreed to pay Newcastle United up to £100 million for midfielder Sandro Tonali. The deal consists of an initial £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons and exceeds an earlier offer of about £80 million that Newcastle rejected. The agreement comes after Tottenham completed an £85 million transfer for midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham earlier in the window.
The club could spend a combined £237 million on centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke and midfielders Fernandes and Tonali after signing defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers. Manager Roberto De Zerbi identified Tonali as a target years earlier while in charge of Sassuolo.
He stated in his final news conference last season that his target was to start pre-season with the team he has in his dream.
De Zerbi has told Tonali that he intends to rebuild the side around the midfielder. Tonali arrived at Newcastle from AC Milan for £55 million in the summer of 2023. He received a 10-month suspension for breaching betting rules and returned to action in August 2024.
He helped Newcastle win the Carabao Cup in 2025 before agreeing personal terms with Tottenham that include a significant wage rise. Manchester City and Arsenal showed interest in Tonali but made no formal approaches. Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League in back-to-back seasons and defeated Everton 1-0 on the final day of the previous campaign.
Newcastle signed 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, who has never played top-flight football, after agreeing to sell Tonali. The club have needed to trade players to reinvest following the departures of Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Tonali in less than a year.
