Toy Story 5 Grosses $312 Million Opening Weekend but Remains Short of Breakeven

Toy Story 5 grossed $312 million in its opening weekend, the largest total for the franchise, Fortune reported. The result topped Toy Story 4's $238 million opening in 2019. The newest film follows Woody and Buzz Lightyear as they compete with a tablet for their owner Bonnie's attention.

The production budget reached $250 million, with an additional $100 million spent on marketing. Those costs mean the film has not yet turned a profit. Its opening performance indicates further box-office gains ahead.

Since the first Toy Story film in 1995, the franchise has generated $16 billion in revenue for Disney across box office, consumer products, games, and publishing. Disney acquired Pixar in 2006. Steve Jobs bought the computer animation division of Lucasfilm in 1985 for $5 million after his departure from Apple and added another $5 million in investment.

He received 70 percent ownership of the company that became Pixar, with the remaining 30 percent distributed to employees. Pixar released the Pixar Image Computer in 1986 and sold its hardware business to Vicom Systems in 1990 for $2 million. Disney and Pixar agreed in 1991 to co-produce Toy Story.

The 1995 film grossed about $400 million worldwide on a budget one-twelfth that size. Pixar went public immediately afterward, with shares closing at $39 on the first day of trading after an expected range of $12 to $14. Jobs sold Pixar to Disney in 2006 for $7.4 billion in stock.

His shares were valued at approximately $4.6 billion, giving him a 7 percent stake in Disney. Pixar released Hoppers earlier in 2026.
