Trade for player on hold pending league investigation outcome

A planned trade that would send a player back to his former team has been placed on hold until the league completes its investigation into a sponsorship agreement tied to the player's contract. The two organizations involved announced the delay Thursday.

Officials stated the league office informed them that completing the trade now would place one side at risk of any sanctions or contract changes that might result from the probe. The organization that agreed to acquire the player said it will wait for the investigation to finish before proceeding.

Officials added that the team remains interested in completing the deal once the matter is resolved.

Background on the agreement The trade was first agreed to on June 30.

Under its terms, the acquiring team would send multiple players, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 pick swap, and two second-round picks in exchange for the player. The league investigation began last offseason after a series of reports alleged salary-cap circumvention through a now-bankrupt sponsorship company.

The organization under investigation has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Commissioner comments and timeline League commissioner Adam Silver said before Game 1 of the NBA Finals last month that an independent law firm is conducting the probe. He stated the firm is far along but emphasized the need for a correct outcome over speed.
