Two trains collided near Jakarta, Indonesia, on April 27, 2026, killing at least 14 people and injuring 84 others. The collision occurred at Bekasi Timur Station in Bekasi, just outside the capital, when an intercity train traveling from Jakarta to Surabaya smashed into a stopped commuter train.

Local time when a taxi became stuck on the tracks at a railroad crossing near the station. Trains in the area were instructed to stop. A commuter train hit the taxi, but no one was injured in that initial impact.

Shortly afterward, the Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train, carrying 240 passengers, failed to stop completely on a different track and crashed into another commuter train that had halted at the station. The intercity train struck the rear car of the commuter train. All fatalities were on the commuter train, according to authorities.

Footage from Monday night showed the front of the first commuter train pressed up against the side of the taxi on the track. Images from the station depicted rescue workers carrying injured people out of damaged cars, passing stretchers through the windows.

Rescue teams worked through the night searching for survivors in the wreckage, said Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency.

He stated that several people were freed from the wreckage. Efforts continued to free two trapped passengers in the wreckage, with crews prying open mangled carriages. Mohammad Syafii described the process as delicate, noting that personnel with specific skills were needed for measured extrication.

Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri said six or seven people remained trapped inside the carriages. Rescue teams worked to reach five passengers trapped in the damaged commuter train car. All 240 passengers on the Argo Bromo Anggrek train were safe, officials said.

Some 38 passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to PT Kereta Api Indonesia, the state-owned railway company. Rail services near the Indonesian capital remained disrupted on April 28, 2026, and Bekasi Timur Station was closed to commuters for the rest of the day, authorities stated. Indonesia's president ordered an investigation after the collision.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident, Asep Edi Suheri told reporters at the scene. The state-owned railway company apologized to customers. Franoto Wibowo, a spokesman for Indonesia’s state-owned railway operator, explained that the intercity train failed to stop completely and crashed into the stopped commuter train.

Bobby Rasyidin, president director of state-owned railway operator KAI, said the accident involved one taxi and three commuter trains starting at about 20:00 on April 27, 2026. He added that 84 people are being treated for injuries in nearby hospitals.

Officials ended a nearly 12-hour rescue effort near Bekasi Timur station on April 28, 2026. Surabaya is Indonesia’s second-largest city, located on the other end of Java, the country’s main island.

Medical expenses for the injured and funeral expenses for the deceased will be fully covered by KAI and insurance, authorities said. Several passengers were trapped in a badly damaged car. The collision injured at least 84 people, according to the rescue agency.

Officials stated that the death toll from the collision rose to 14 with 84 injured, via the train operator.
