AB Hernandez, a senior at Jurupa Valley High School, advanced to the finals in the girls long jump, high jump and triple jump at the CIF State Track & Field Championships on Saturday. Hernandez recorded the top qualifying mark in two of those events during Friday's preliminary round.

Inside the stadium, Hernandez finished third in the girls long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 2 1/4 inches. First place went to Ellie McCuskey-Hay of St. Ignatius High School and Gianna Gonzalez of Moorpark High School, who each cleared 20 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

Corinne Jones from St. Mary's High School placed fourth but shared third place with Hernandez under a CIF policy that elevates the highest-finishing biological female when a transgender athlete places in an event.

School in Clovis, demonstrators wearing shirts that read "Save Girl's Sports" gathered around the championship site. Some carried signs stating "No boys. Officials awarded duplicate gold medals to the female runners-up in that meet. One week later, Hernandez again took first place in all three events at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Masters Meet.

Officials once more awarded gold medals to the second-place female finishers. During the state championship medal ceremony, some competitors kept distance from Hernandez, and one reportedly declined to stand on the podium.
