Trent Williams Signs Two-Year, $50M Extension With 49ers, Says He Expects to Retire After 2027
Trent Williams confirmed the two-year, $50 million deal is likely his last and said he expects to retire after the 2027 season. The 37-year-old left tackle cited family priorities as he approaches his 38th birthday.
San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams signed a two-year, $50 million contract extension and told Bay Area media on Wednesday that the agreement is probably the final deal he will sign. Williams, who turns 38 on July 19, said he envisions his career ending after the 2027 season. "Yeah, probably," he said when asked if he saw his playing days concluding at the end of the extension.
The 16-year veteran entered the NFL in 2010, the same year his daughter was born. He said the time away from family has weighed on him. "It's been a long time, and I have a daughter who was born a few months before I got drafted.
As a father, you feel like, 'Dang, I kind of missed her whole life until adulthood,'" Williams said. Williams added that his daughter will enter college in a couple of years and that he wants to be present. "I want to be there and be accessible, and I don't want to be that father that shadows the kid.
I don't want to be somewhere at a joint practice," he said. He described the competing impulses that remain. "I'm toying between the idea of going until I can't no more and just leaving while I've still got some good product left and not getting ran out the league," Williams said.
"Obviously, I can't tell the future. It's hard not to compete when you can. " Williams has previously expressed a desire to play until age 40. ESPN reported that he has had multiple contract disputes with the 49ers as he has moved through his mid and upper 30s.
M. ET the same day. Nick Wagoner, an NFL reporter who has covered the 49ers since 2016, conducted the session.
