Tropical Storm Domeng Strengthens to 95 km/h Winds East of Luzon

Severe Tropical Storm Domeng, also known as Jangmi, intensified from a tropical storm on Friday evening, May 29. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration reported maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 115 km/h.

At 10 pm on May 29 the storm was located 1,045 km east of Central Luzon and moving west-northwest at 15 km/h. Officials said Domeng is projected to remain far from the Philippine landmass and may later recurve toward Japan.

Domeng’s trough is producing scattered rain and thunderstorms over Eastern Visayas, Sorsogon, and Masbate. Flash floods and landslides remain possible in those areas. The agency said the storm could become a typhoon over the Philippine Sea by Saturday evening, May 30. Beginning Sunday, May 31, an enhanced southwesterly windflow is expected to bring heavy rain to western sections of the country.

5 meters through the next 24 hours. Other northern and eastern seaboards face waves of 2 to 3 meters, prompting small vessels to take precautions. Tropical cyclone wind signals are considered unlikely at present because of the storm’s distance from land.

The agency noted that extreme Northern Luzon could still be placed under a signal if conditions change. Domeng is the fourth tropical cyclone to enter the Philippine area of responsibility in 2026 and the second in May. It is expected to exit the area on Monday, June 1.
