Tropical Storm Maysak Makes Landfall in Hainan, Halting Flights and Ferries

Tropical Storm Maysak made landfall on Hainan’s southeastern coast around 6:20 p.m. local time on Friday, bringing maximum sustained winds of 23 meters per second. The storm prompted immediate suspensions of flights, rail service and ferry crossings. Sanya Phoenix International Airport halted takeoffs and landings from 5 p.m. after 92 flights had already been canceled by 11:30 a.m.

All round-island high-speed rail operations were stopped for the day. Passenger ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait were suspended from 2 a.m. and are expected to remain halted for one to two days. Authorities called on local governments to increase monitoring of flood-prone areas and to carry out evacuations where necessary.
