The Trump administration will distribute nearly $700 million in federal funds to the U.S. coal industry on Thursday under the Defense Production Act, a Korean War-era statute. The $425 million portion targets 13 operating coal plants in West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Arizona, Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.

A separate $75 million allocation supports a California export terminal that can ship up to 12 million tons of coal per year and has faced permitting delays for nearly two decades.

An additional $185 million in Energy Department grants will support construction of two new coal plants, one in Alaska and one in West Virginia. Matching private capital raises the total investment for the new facilities to $386 million. The White House stated the funding advances AI infrastructure and national security needs.

Coal's share of U.S. power generation has declined from over 50 percent to 16-17 percent in recent years.
