The Trump administration deported Tou Lue Vang from the United States on or before July 10, 2026. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked Vang’s legal status earlier that week, after which federal agents took him into custody. ” Vang was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for repeatedly assaulting a 10-year-old girl.
He was arrested in 2005, pleaded guilty, and received a removal order in 2006 along with a suspended 12-year prison sentence, 30 years of supervised probation, and one year in a county workhouse, of which he served eight months. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz pardoned Vang on June 10, 2026.
The Minnesota Clemency Review Commission, headed by Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Chief Justice Natalie Hudson, granted the pardon. Ramsey County prosecutors opposed the clemency bid. Vang was born in a Thai refugee camp in 1983 and entered the United States via California in 1994, receiving permanent residency during the Clinton administration.
He was detained in Minnesota during President Trump’s “Operation Metro Surge” crackdown. Laos has no formal repatriation agreement with the United States.
