The Trump administration has closed the alcohol program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eliminated over half the staff at a federal agency focused on substance use, and buried a report concluding that light drinking poses health risks, Stat reported.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism also removed information about the health risks of moderate drinking from its website in January. Dietary guidelines were altered to eliminate suggested drinking limits.
Drinking causes more deaths in the U.S. each year than infectious diseases and opioids combined. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has directed most of his investments toward opioids or homeless Americans rather than excessive alcohol use in the broader population.
