nbcnews.comThe Trump administration announced on Tuesday a limited-edition Social Security card for babies born during the United States semiquincentennial. Washington Examiner reported that the card features the phrase “Freedom 250” and marks the recipient’s birth during the nation’s 250th year. The cards will be available only for babies born between July 2 and December 31, 2026.
They are identical in function to a standard Social Security card and will be produced at no additional cost to families or taxpayers, according to the Social Security Administration. The limited editions will be issued automatically through the Enumeration at Birth program.
Parents can request a Social Security number while completing birth registration paperwork at hospitals, birthing centers, or through licensed midwives.
Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano stated that the cards celebrate the nation’s history. “Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago,” Bisignano said.
Bisignano added that the next generation of Americans born during this historic year will receive the cards.
“Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we are strengthening Social Security, improving service, and building an SSA to serve Americans today and in the future,” he said. The rollout forms part of broader initiatives planned to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary throughout 2026.
