Trump Administration Seeks Year-Round E15 Sales Despite Summer Smog Limits

The Trump administration intends to ask Congress to permit year-round sales of E15 ethanol-gas blend at pumps, a U.S. official told CBS News. The request will be included in a supplemental funding package scheduled for delivery to lawmakers on Wednesday.
E15 contains 15 percent ethanol. Federal rules currently limit its availability to cooler months because the blend evaporates faster in heat and raises smog levels. A 10 percent blend known as E10 is sold throughout the year.
Gas prices have increased because of the war with Iran. President Trump said during the campaign that he supported making E15 available year-round. The White House has stated that year-round E15 sales could save drivers more than $20 billion annually in fuel costs.
E15 prices are generally about 25 cents per gallon lower than regular gasoline, according to the Renewable Fuels Association. Lawmakers from corn-growing states argue the blend provides a cheaper option at the pump and supports rural jobs. In March 2026 the administration issued emergency waivers allowing E15 sales ahead of and during the summer driving season.
It remains unclear whether the new proposal will secure enough votes to pass.
