Promenade to Connect Lincoln Memorial to Potomac River

President Trump announced on June 4, 2026, during an Oval Office event that his administration intends to build a promenade connecting the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River. "It's called the promenade, will be the promenade," Trump said.

The project is part of renovations underway across Washington in preparation for the nation's 250th anniversary. Workers are finishing repairs on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Trump gave an update on the reflecting pool at the event. "The water is pouring in as we speak ... nice, clean water," he said.

The White House East Wing was demolished in 2025 to make room for a ballroom project. Trump has also proposed a triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial. Trump's name was added to the Kennedy Center earlier in the term.

He abandoned plans for a two-year overhaul of the venue last week after a federal judge ruled he could not rename the performing arts center or close it without congressional approval.
