US Begins Guiding Stranded Ships Through Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump announced that the United States will begin guiding stranded ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, dubbing the effort Project Freedom. The initiative targets neutral vessels trapped since the war with Iran began in February, aiming to allow them to exit safely without interference.

Trump described it as a humanitarian gesture benefiting the US, Iran, and other Middle Eastern nations. The operation involves US Central Command deploying 15,000 personnel, guided-missile destroyers, and over 100 aircraft. An estimated 20,000 sailors remain trapped in the Gulf, facing dwindling supplies and health concerns.

Trump warned that any interference would be met forcefully.

The announcement follows a fragile ceasefire in place for over two weeks. Trump noted positive discussions with Iran that could lead to a broader resolution. However, he expressed skepticism about Iran's latest 14-point peace proposal, received via Pakistan, stating it was unacceptable as Iran has not paid a sufficient price.

Iran's proposal calls for the US to withdraw forces from near its borders, end the naval blockade, cease all hostilities including Israel's offensive in Lebanon, and reach an agreement within 30 days. It emphasizes ending the war rather than extending the ceasefire.

The US responded with an amended draft on Sunday, according to Axios.

“At this stage, we do not have nuclear negotiations" — Esmaeil Baghaei, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman (BBC). Trump confirmed receiving the proposal on Saturday and indicated military strikes could resume if Iran misbehaves. He affirmed the US would not fully withdraw from the conflict.”

The British military also noted a bulk carrier under attack near the strait. These incidents highlight ongoing risks despite the ceasefire. Iran has limited traffic through the strait since the war started, firing on ships and laying mines, while the US enforces a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
