Trump Says Any Iran Deal Must Be Great or There Will Be None

President Trump stated on Monday that any agreement with Iran will be great and meaningful or there will be no deal. The comments come days after he said an accord had been largely negotiated to end the nearly three-month war.

The statement followed his earlier claim that an agreement with Tehran had been largely negotiated to end the war that began on February 28.

Tehran have observed a ceasefire since April 8 while mediators seek a negotiated settlement. Iran has continued to block the Strait of Hormuz to most shipping and the United States has blockaded Iran’s ports.

Iranian and U.S.

Baghaei told a news conference in Tehran that the two sides have not been talking about the nuclear issue and are focused on ending the war. He said there are no guarantees the United States would honour its commitments and that Tehran does not care about threats.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington will either secure a strong agreement with Iran or confront the country another way. Rubio told reporters in New Delhi that officials thought they might have some news last night or today and would not read too much into the timing.

He said the United States has a pretty solid thing on the table regarding Iran’s ability to open the straits.

Officials from Pakistan were in China on Monday for talks with Chinese leaders as part of mediation efforts. A senior Trump administration official told Reuters that Iran had agreed in principle to dispose of its highly enriched uranium and open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the United States lifting its naval blockade.

The official said the United States understood that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had endorsed the broad template of the deal. The same official said Washington envisions first reopening the strait and lifting the blockade, with nuclear details to be negotiated later.

Charles Kupchan, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the back and forth means a deal will not likely be agreed anytime soon. >"I think this is kind of par for the course for the Trump administration. One day they walk this way.
