cnbc.comPresident Trump will arrive in France on Monday for a two-day Group of Seven summit in the resort town of Évian-les-Bains. The gathering is expected to focus on the Iran war that began February 28 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump posted on social media Sunday that a deal had been reached with Iran that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz without toll charges.
The long-term status of the agreement depends on whether Iran develops nuclear weapons. Trump has stated that European allies have not done enough to support American objectives in the Iran conflict. European leaders have said they were not consulted before the military action and have described it as outside the framework of international law.
On Tuesday, Trump and other G7 leaders will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine's position has strengthened through its use of drone systems. A senior Trump administration official said last week that the administration wants the war to end quickly.
European officials have expressed concern that any agreement could allow Russia to retain territory it currently controls. After the summit, Trump is scheduled to meet French President Emmanuel Macron for a private dinner at the Palace of Versailles. Macron postponed the summit by one day to accommodate Trump's attendance at an event on the White House grounds.
Putin and Zelenskyy each called Trump separately on the eve of the summit to discuss the Ukraine conflict. A Russian statement said Putin expressed respect for Trump's ability to achieve goals.
