President Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open without tolls or restrictions. He stated that mines will be removed and stranded ships will be able to return home. The post came roughly one hour after Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi wrote about a call with his Omani counterpart.

Araghchi said the two countries discussed the strait and its future administration in line with sovereign responsibilities and international law.

Background on the Waterway The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20 percent of the world's oil shipments. Reports last week indicated that Iran and Oman had discussed a long-term tolling system for ships passing through the waterway. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday that the United States would consider sanctions on Oman if it participated in any tolling arrangement.

The shipping demands form part of broader discussions between the United States and Iran over extending the current ceasefire for 60 days. The proposed extension would lift restrictions on shipping through the strait during that period. Analysts have noted that any agreement would require support from Gulf states including Oman.

Terry Haines of Pangaea Policy stated that no deal happens without Gulf buy-in.

How else this could be read

Trump is pragmatically enforcing freedom of navigation through a critical global chokepoint against Iran's effort to impose illegal tolls and assert dominance over international waters.
