President Trump canceled the scheduled signing ceremony for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Package on Wednesday morning. He announced on Truth Social that the Housing News Conference and Signing is cancelled until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, which he described as a national emergency. The legislation passed the House by a 358-32 vote and the Senate by an 85-5 vote.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said he spoke with President Trump for 20 minutes on Wednesday morning and that the president still plans to sign the housing bill within the next ten days. Axios reported that the housing affordability bill would become law without the president's signature if he takes no action within ten days of receiving it.
President Trump is scheduled to meet Senate Republicans at a lunch on Capitol Hill later Wednesday.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune was on the Senate floor when the cancellation was announced and told reporters he had no observations about it. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, described the situation as inexplicable.
USA Today reported that the SAVE America Act would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote and direct states to provide voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security.
