Trump Cancels Iran Bombings After Draft Deal Approved, as Iran Keeps Uranium Enrichment and Strait Control

President Donald Trump said on June 12, 2026, that a draft accord with Iran had been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, and he cancelled a threatened wave of bombings against targets in Iran. Trump stated that the finer points of the arrangement had been approved by the United States and its regional allies, including Israel.

He added that he understood Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei had approved the deal.

Iran stated on the same day that it would insist on its right to enrich uranium and retain control over the Strait of Hormuz in any agreement with the United States. Iran's official IRNA news agency said stripping Iran of enriched nuclear material was not on the table. Mehr news agency published what it said was the text of a draft deal being finalized.

The draft includes the release of $24 billion in Iran's frozen assets, a 60-day period for negotiations on Tehran's nuclear programme, suspension of sanctions on the sale of Iran's oil and petrochemical products, and the complete lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports that has been in place since April 13.

The draft states that the United States and its allies should pay Iran reparations and present reconstruction plans amounting to at least $300 billion. It adds that final negotiations will not begin before the release of half of Iran's blocked funds, suspension of Iran's oil sanctions, and lifting of the naval blockade.

The draft deal would end the war on all fronts including Lebanon. Iran and the United States had conducted weeks of indirect negotiations to end the war that began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. A ceasefire between Iran and the United States took effect in April.
