President Donald Trump said extreme heat affecting Fourth of July events in Washington, D.C., was not as severe as predicted even as temperatures reached triple digits and sent several visitors to medical care. The president posted on Truth Social that crowds remained large despite the conditions.

250 events closed the Great American State Fair on the National Mall on Friday afternoon because of the heat. The closure followed earlier problems including an algae bloom in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and infrastructure issues at the fair.

Park Police, National Park Service, Secret Service and FEMA issued a joint statement saying safety remained the top priority. The statement said the agencies had coordinated to adjust event timing and expand cooling resources, water stations and medical support.
Trump also wrote that the Reflecting Pool would be drained and repaired after the weekend. He said the country is stronger than ever. More than 850,000 pyrotechnic effects are planned for the National Mall display, according to Freedom 250.
