DHS Review Found Over 278,000 Noncitizens on Voter Rolls

President Donald Trump said during a July 16 primetime address that a Department of Homeland Security review had identified more than 278,000 noncitizens registered to vote nationwide. The White House released declassified documents naming Nevada, California, Pennsylvania and New Jersey as states where more than 250,000 of those registrations appeared.

The review used public data files and will expand to additional states.

Nevada officials said the figures were speculative and that the Department of Homeland Security had not shared proof supporting the claims. They noted that the state already maintains safeguards to prevent ineligible individuals from voting. A letter from the Department of Homeland Security to Nevada's chief election officer alleged as many as 15,903 noncitizens on state rolls, including 8,576 cases where name, date of birth, address and Social Security number matched noncitizen records.

The letter set a July 30 deadline for the state to respond. Nevada officials countered that the administration had not answered basic questions about how the data were compiled.

Democratic senators from Nevada described the claims as previously debunked and said they distract from other issues. The Nevada Republican Party issued a statement supporting the review and calling for accurate voter rolls. The Department of Justice sent letters earlier this month to all 50 states warning that election officials could face prosecution for allowing noncitizens to vote.

President Donald Trump called on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require voter identification and proof of citizenship.
