Trump Discusses Strait of Hormuz Control in Cabinet Meeting

President Trump said during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday that the United States would 'blow up' Oman if the Gulf state interferes with reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The comments came after reports that Iran and Oman had discussed jointly charging tolls for ships passing through the strait, which has been closed since late February.

Trump stated that the strait is international waters and will remain open to all vessels. He said Oman must 'behave just like everybody else' or face U.S. action. He accused Iran of attempting to stall negotiations until after U.S. midterm elections.

The strait normally carries about one-fifth of global oil supplies. Its closure has contributed to a global energy crisis. >"The strait is going to be open to everybody. It's international waters and Oman will behave just like everybody else or we'll have to blow them up.

The remarks were made in response to a question about whether he would accept a short-term arrangement giving Iran and Oman joint oversight. Officials have not announced any immediate change in U.S. military posture in the region.
