Trump-Endorsed Andy Biggs Holds 50-Point Lead in Arizona GOP Primary

Rep. Andy Biggs holds a 50-point lead over his rivals in Arizona's Republican gubernatorial primary scheduled for July 21. President Trump endorsed Biggs and said at an April Phoenix rally that he hated to lose him from Congress but that Biggs would be a great governor.

Usa Today reported that Trump won Arizona by about six percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. Forecasters shifted the general election prediction to leans Democratic this month. Jessica Taylor, an analyst for the Cook Political Report, said Arizona Republicans have rejected election deniers in statewide races and that Democrats will paint Biggs with that message.

Katie Hobbs said in an email interview that the race will be close because Arizona is a swing state and that she is not paying much attention to Washington pundits. Biggs criticized Hobbs for issuing 541 vetoes against the Republican-controlled legislature and said she stays hidden and will not debate him. Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 310,000 registered voters in Arizona.

Biggs faces Rep. David Schweikert, Ken Miceli of Scottsdale, and Scott Neely of Mesa in the primary. Biggs declined three times when asked about the 2020 election outcome and said he would not be critical of Republicans with diverse viewpoints.

He co-sponsored a 2018 proposal with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries to require more reporting from lobbyists. A Common Sense Institute Arizona report released in April ranked the state at the bottom nationwide in affordability due to rising housing costs.

A WalletHub study released in February placed Arizona in the lower half of states for well-educated population. Lorna Romero Ferguson said Biggs can talk about more issues than the 2020 election, which was the main theme of Kari Lake's campaign. Lake filed multiple lawsuits seeking to overturn Hobbs' 2022 victory or redo the election in Maricopa County.
