Trump told reporters the concept would allow the public to receive dividends similar to stockholders, which he said could reduce concerns about AI-related job losses. He added that he has already spoken to the companies involved.

Sacks opposes government equity stake David Sacks, who served as the Trump administration’s former AI czar, wrote on X that he opposes Sen. Bernie Sanders’ bill calling for 50 percent government ownership in leading AI companies. Sacks said the proposal resonates with some conservatives because AI executives had previously warned of large-scale job losses.

He noted that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have since reduced those forecasts ahead of planned IPOs. Sacks wrote that he could “almost support the Sanders proposal as a stupidity tax” but warned that nationalization would increase corporate-government fusion and could lead to a system with broad control over information and behavior.

Bernie Sanders wrote in a New York Times op-ed that his bill would share financial gains with the public and give the government authority to block decisions that could harm Americans. He added that the value of a sovereign wealth fund created by the bill would grow if AI companies expand as expected.

Earlier discussions reported Senior U.S. officials have held preliminary talks with AI executives, including Altman, about the government potentially acquiring shares, with returns directed to public purposes, according to a NOTUS report. Altman first raised the idea with Trump in early 2025 and discussed it again with administration officials in recent weeks, the report said.
