Trump says he will meet with Democratic mayoral nominee in Washington, D.C.

He stated he will not allow her proposed policies to be implemented in the city. Trump referred to Lewis George as a communist in a Truth Social post. He listed several policy positions she has stated, including emptying prisons, making the District a sanctuary city, opposing ICE, welcoming certain noncitizens, resisting anti-crime measures, defunding police, and expanding cashless bail.

Background on the primary Lewis George is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. She defeated Kenyan McDuffie in the Democratic primary by a margin of 54.1 percent to 35.2 percent, according to the Associated Press. After her opponent conceded, Lewis George said she would work with anyone who makes the District safer but would also stand up to Trump.

Federal role in the District The Trump administration has undertaken a beautification campaign for several Washington monuments and landmarks. Current District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser has cooperated with some federal initiatives, including a National Guard deployment last year.

Trump said Lewis George's plans will never work out and that the beautification process has been second to none. It remains unclear whether the planned meeting would occur before or after the November 3 election.
