President Trump said Thursday he would be honored to meet Iran's supreme leader if the encounter produced a deal to end the war. He spoke to reporters in the Oval Office after an announcement on coal policy. Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei became supreme leader after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on the first day of fighting.

The younger Khamenei now leads Iran during the fourth month of the conflict. S. and Israeli strikes that killed the elder Khamenei and other family members, he expects the new leader to act professionally.

He added that Khamenei holds a good reputation in some circles. The war has been under a tenuous ceasefire for weeks. Iran has kept the Strait of Hormuz closed since the start of hostilities, restricting a channel that carries roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies.

The United States is seeking a permanent Iranian commitment against nuclear weapons and an immediate reopening of the strait. Iranian negotiators are pressing for an end to hostilities on multiple fronts and the lifting of a naval blockade on Iranian ports. "If we make a deal, it's possible that I would meet," he said.
