Trump Says He No Longer Views Anthropic as National Security Threat

President Donald Trump said he no longer views Anthropic as a national security threat. Trump made the statement in an Axios interview that aired on June 19. He said the change followed a meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the G7 summit this week.

"Well, not now, but a week ago, maybe," Trump said when asked if he still viewed Anthropic and Amodei as a national security threat. " Trump stated that a competitor "turned Anthropic in" and raised alarms over the new models. " On June 12, the Trump administration directed Anthropic to shut down foreign nationals' access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models.

Following the directive, Anthropic suspended access to all users entirely for both models. Anthropic stated its understanding that the government believes a method of bypassing or "jailbreaking" Fable 5 had been discovered. The directive did not include specific details of potential security threats, according to the company.

Anthropic released Fable 5 to the general public on June 9. " Fable 5 is described as as strong as Mythos but with key safety features for public use. Anthropic made Mythos 5 available to a small group of cyberdefenders and infrastructure providers.

Both models remain unavailable following the June 12 suspension. Two days before the suspension, Amodei wrote on X that frontier models such as Mythos 5 should face mandatory third-party testing for cyber, bio, and autonomy risks. Early this month, Trump signed an executive order asking AI firms to voluntarily submit their frontier models for government review 30 days before general public availability.
