President Donald Trump said he may release his current tax returns after reaching a settlement with the Justice Department this week. The agreement permanently drops tax claims against the president, his family and associates. It resolves a $10 billion lawsuit filed by Trump against the Internal Revenue Service over a leak of his tax returns.

“I may even release my current returns,” the president told reporters Wednesday.

The Justice Department said the government is “forever barred and precluded” from pursuing or prosecuting current tax examinations of Trump, his sons and the Trump Organization. Officials stated the settlement covers only existing audits, not future examinations. 776 billion fund to compensate Trump allies who believe they have been unjustly investigated and prosecuted.

Trump has made repeated commitments over the years to release his tax returns, including during his first presidential campaign and in a May 2017 interview. He has not followed through on those pledges. In 2022, Democrats in Congress released thousands of pages of his tax returns covering 2015-2020.

Those documents showed how Trump used the tax code to lower his tax obligation and revealed details about foreign accounts and charitable contributions. Democrats and government watchdogs have called the new settlement arrangement “corrupt” and unconstitutional.

The White House referred questions about when the returns may become available to Trump’s comments.
