U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he will speak with Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, a move that would break more than four decades of diplomatic protocol. Trump made the statement after returning from a state visit to Beijing.

Trump told reporters he would discuss Taiwan with Lai and added that he had a productive meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Beijing trip. The White House is considering a new arms sales package for Taiwan that could reach $14 billion. Taiwan's government has stated that U.S. policy toward the island remains unchanged.

Ching-te said Taiwan remains committed to maintaining the stable status quo in the Taiwan Strait. He described China as the disruptor of peace and stability. Lai added that he would be happy to discuss these matters with President Trump. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released the statement on Thursday.
