Melat Kiros, also a democratic socialist, won a Colorado primary June 30. Rep. Tom Suozzi introduced a centrist platform called “Promise to America” that lists capitalism among its core values. CNN reported that one winning candidate, Darializa Avila Chevalier, had previously posted statements sympathetic to communist figures; she denied being a communist.
Geevarghese, executive director of Our Revolution, said the communist label is outdated. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said voters are focused on affordability issues rather than ideology. Matt Bennett of Third Way said some democratic socialist statements are radical but argued the communist label exaggerates the situation.
